Singapore Secondary School Progression Path
Primary school students in Singapore will be offered different courses in secondary schools after Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE). Generally, each secondary school will offer 2 courses - Normal and Express/Express and Special.
Normal – After PSLE, Students admitted to Normal course will be further streamed into Normal Academic (NA) & Normal Technical (NT). Students from (NA) & (NT) will be offered common curriculum subjects but different core and elective subjects. After 4 years, students will sit for GCE ‘N’ level examination. (NA) students may sit for GCE ‘O’ level examination on the 5th year.
Express – 4 year course leading to GCE ‘O’ level examination. Students will be offered 7 to 8 subjects and top 11-30% of cohort will be offered higher mother tongue subjects.
Special - Top 10% of PSLE cohort will be admitted to Special course. Course subjects similar to Express except that students will be offered a 3rd language such as French, German, Japanese, Malay.
Polytechnics - Polytechnics were set up with the mission to train middle-level professionals to support the technological and economic development of Singapore. There are currently 5 polytechnics in Singapore.
Junior College and Centralised Institute (CI) - The 2-3 years course in Junior Colleges and Centralised Institutes help to prepare students for university education.Students will receive a school graduation certificate after GCE 'A' examination.
University - Singpore Universities are highly reputable and recognised worldwide. There are 3 universities now: National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Singapore Management University (SMU). The 3 universities offer wide range of courses as well as non academic activities.
